Descendants of William H. Bell
Generation One
1. William H.1 Bell was born circa 1820 in AL. He married Ann E(lizabeth?) Foshee, daughter of ? Fouchet\Foshee and ? (--?--), on 22 May 1842 in Shelby County, AL. He died in Feb 1892 in Concord, Cleburne County, AR. He was buried in Concord Cemetery, Concord, Cleburne County, AR.
Occupations: Farmer, leather tanner, and shoe cobbler. He was of Irish descent.
His middle initial is "H.", which may be for Hampton. Some people think his middle name is Zachariah. However, in all instances of legal record, his middle initial is shown to be "H".
Census: 1850 Subdivision 18, Blount County, AL, page 115; 1860 Blount County, AL, page 1110; 1870 Marshall County, MS, page 631; 1880 Independence County, AR, ED 129, sheet 19. In 1850 no middle initial is shown; in the others it is "H.". In each one of the censuses he states that he was born in Alabama.
He applied for a land patent before the 1850 census. But it was not recorded until 1858. On 1 Mar 1858 he patented 320 acres of land in eastern Blount County, Alabama in Township 12S, Range 2E, and Section 36. The land patent and his marriage certificate shows his middle initial is "H." The date of death was once thought to be 12 May 1890. In Arkansas the deed assigning land from William Bell's children to Mary L. Harbin includes this phrase, "we being the lawful heirs of W.H. Bell, deceased," was signed on Feb. 26, 1892. According to Joe Vincent, there were other deeds assigned to the other children of William Bell. If these were assigned near the time of the death of William H. Bell, then his date of death would be about Feb. 1892.
In March or April 1869, about one month after his oldest son was murdered, he and his family moved to Arkansas. On the way they lived in Mt. Pleasant, Mississippi for three years to replenish their supplies. In 1872 they arrived in Tina, Arkansas, where present-day Concord is.
From "Concord Was My Home" by Elizabeth Brock-Light in the "Cleburne County Historical Journal, Fall 1979" about the William H. Bell family:
"They left Alabama heartbroken at the loss of their son, John, who was killed by bushwhackers in the Civil War. These same bushwhackers had ravaged their farm and home, taking everything they could find of any value, leaving the family almost destitute. They left Alabama actually in fear for the lives of the men in the family. "
Julia C. Helms has written a four-page story of the exodus as told by Susan Francis Bell-Long. Julia has also written a six-page story as told by Mayme Della Long-Jordan. Zelda Lee Harbin-Hunter has written a one-page story as told by Mary Louisa Bell-Harbin.
These four stories tell of hasty preparation and an exhausting journey before finally reaching Arkansas.
Another story told by Ora Bell-Cooper about Susan and James Owen Bell was in the "Arkansas Democrat", Sunday, 8 Feb 1976. They were confronted by five robbers one night on the trip; but they escaped that situation without any harm to themselves or their property.
Ann E(lizabeth?) Foshee was born on 8 Mar 1821 in NC. She died in Feb 1891 in Concord, Cleburne County, AR, at age 69. She was buried in Concord Cemetery, Concord, Cleburne County, AR. She was also known as Forshee. She was also known as Fouchet. Ann's father was probably from France; her mother may be a Cherokee. In each census from 1850 through 1880, it states she was born in NC. The date of birth of 08 Mar 1821 is from Velma Foshee (1990), James Hamilton (1995) and Joe Vincent (1999). Her marriage certificate states her name as "Anna Forshee". Marlin Ellis wrote Julia C. Helms and said he and Katy Bishop were going through an old trunk that had belonged to Nancy Bell Ellis. They found a pair of reading glasses wrapped in a piece of paper on which was written "Ann Fouchet Bell, died Feb. 1891.".

The "Clinton Daily News", Jan 20, 1985 has an article titled "Herman, Mable Lowe Recall Early Butler". Here are some excerpts. "Herman and Mabel Lowe are survivors of the economic depression of the '30s, the Dust Bowl days and life in general. They have worked hard all their lives, but are enjoying retirement. They live at Weatherford, but they have lived in the past at Butler, mostly, and at Canton and Elk City and know Western Oklahoma. Herman is an import from Arkansas, but Mabel was born at Butler. Herman is the son of Margaret (Maggie) Ann and John L. Lowe. Maggie Ann and John L. were early day traveling photographers. Their territory was all over Southeast Oklahoma and southwest Arkansas. The photographs taken by the Lowes as represented in the collection which Herman has are good. Mabel was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Northrop of Butler. Mr. Northrop was a rural mail carrier. Mabel's mother went to work doing laundry for people in the Butler area. She bought a gasoline engine powered washing machine, the first in Butler. Until 1918, when the Lowe family moved to Deer Creek, Oklahoma, according to Herman, they were "Rolling stones that gathered no moss". When the talents of the traveling photographer were no longer needed , the Lowes settled down.
Herman attended high school at Deer Creek. He went to work for a natural gasoline plant at Deer Creek. Mabel graduated from high school at Butler in 1929. She met Herman when he moved there with the gasoline plant. They married in June of 1930. In October of 1930, the depression caused Herman to lose his job at the plant. Unable to find work in Butler, Herman and Mabel moved to Deer Creek and lived with the elder Lowes for a year. "We got by that year because Mr. and Mrs. Lowe had milk cows and eggs. What we didn't sell, we ate," recalls Mabel. Then he went to work for a farmer for a while.
Herman said, "Then I had to work on the roads to pay my poll tax. Everyone had to pay that poll tax in those days." Herman could buy a bushel of wheat for 25 cents. He took the wheat to Bremen and the mill there ground it for the bran they got out of the wheat. That gave the Lowes flour with which to make bread and gravy. In 1937 Herman went back to work at the gasoline plant. In 1944 they opened the City Cafe in Butler. In 1950 they began operating a roller rink. They operated the Log Cabin restaurant and later Lowe's Restaurant. Then Herman worked for the city of Weatherford as a lab technician until he retired. In retirement they have travelled a lot. "A nice thing about retirement is being able to do things on the spur of the moment any day of the week," say both Herman and Mabel. They often go to see their children.
Mabel and Herman have shared a lot of years of living together. Their memories include some of the most economically desperate years of our recent history. They played a part in the World War II effort through their involvement in the gasoline plant at Butler which shipped all of its production overseas for war effort. Throughout their lives, they have never known anything but hard work. In talking with Mabel and Herman, there is an optimistic outlook which distinguishes Western Oklahomans. As Herman remarked, "It is the little things that get you through.".
Lula Mabel Northrop was born on 18 Mar 1914 in Butler, Custer County, OK. She died on 22 Mar 2001 in Weatherford, Custer County, OK, at age 87. The "Clinton Daily News", Jan 20, 1985 has an article that says, In October of 1930, the depression caused Herman to lose his job at the natural gasoline plant. Unable to find work in Butler, Herman and Mabel moved to Deer Creek and lived with the elder Lowes for a year." During the depression and World War II, Herman was able to work and keep the family together. In 1944 they opened the City Cafe in Butler. In 1950 they began operating a roller rink. They operated the Log Cabin restaurant and later Lowe's Restaurant.

Census: 1940 Butler, Custer County, OK, ED 20-7, page 5B.
